Two suspects were arrested after a 19-year-old woman named one of them as a suspect on her death bed, investigators said.
The woman was dumped on the side of a road outside near Modesto, California Monday morning after being stabbed multiple times, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said.
"We think, at one point, she was likely tied up," Sgt. Ray Kelly said.
The woman then crawled about 100 yards up to the road and was found by two good Samaritans around 2 a.m. on Tesla Road near Interstate 580.
The coworkers from Modesto said they made the horrifying discovery on their way to work.
"I gave her my blanket because it was really freezing cold out there," said a woman who asked to remain anonymous. "She was soaked in blood.
Richard Loadholt said he prayed with the injured woman and kept her awake and talking.
"I just felt compelled by the spirit of love to do that, Loadholt said.
The 19-year-old was taken by helicopter to Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, where she gave investigators what's known as a dying declaration. She named a 19-year-old man as a suspect.
Two hours later, the woman died.
"Those were her last words," Kelly said. "And we used that information to make these arrests."
Investigators went to the man's home in Modesto, taking him and a 19-year-old woman into custody in connection with the stabbing victim's death.
"I'm shaking because I don't know that I have neighbors like that," the suspects' neighbor Bertha Andrade said. "I don't know them to be like that. Murder somebody, you know, like that. For me, it's painful."
The victim may have known the suspects, the sheriff's office said.
Investigators broke the news to the victim's family in Tracy. The good Samaritans said they have a message for her loved ones.
"She was a fighter," one said. "For real, she as fighting for her life."
"I hope it will be encouraging to her family to know that their daughter did have that spirit to fight," Loadholt said.
Investigators are not releasing the motive behind the stabbing at this time.
I see this happened on Monday. At first, I thought it was an update on a very similar crime committed a few months ago where a girl was assaulted, thrown out of the car in middle of nowhere by her own coworkers. Eerily similar.
So, did they release any names or did I miss them?
I thought it was the same incident too - very similar.
This article is from a few weeks ago:
Chose your friends with great care.
I’m guessing that it is still far riskier being a single woman in that situation than a single man. This, despite what others say should be the case.
Harmless marijuana and sex had nothing to do with it...he just snapped....do people do bad things? Nah...they’re perfect children of the universe...star stuff..
I did some research. Here are the culprits!
Daniel Gross, Age 19, Modesto, CA
-Melissa Leonardo, Age 25, Modesto, CA
Both suspects are in custody at Santa Rita Jail
The article states that the victim was dumped outside
of Modesto. That has to be wrong, especially if
Alameda County deputies were at the scene. Modesto
is in Stanislaus County, outside of the jurisdiction of
Alameda County deputies. There are other discrepancies
such as the photo which depicts a curvy road in the
hills. You have to travel quite a ways from Modesto
to be in hill country. Further, the same could be said
of Hwy 580 and the hospital she was transported to
with regard to proximity to Modesto.
In all the world there is no more dangerous class then the friendless and drifting woman. With no one to protect and guide her she invariably incites crime in others’’. Sherlock Holmes. “The Disappearance Of Lady Carfax’’.
I hope the murderers are US citizens. Otherwise, California will probably release them.
I think that’s from the similar crime a couple of weeks ago.
“The victim may have known the suspects, the sheriff’s office said.”
Gee, do you think? Hey sheriff, she named them! Unless they were strangers and introduced themselves to the victim during the crime she did in fact know the “suspects” Sherlock.
Feb 18 I believe!
