This article brought back some really bad memories from 35 years ago. I managed to miss serving in Vietnam by all of two weeks, but the people in the Army that I served with had tales that would curl my hair.

Granted, this article was intended to boost Kerry’s campaign, but even so, I have to have a little more respect for the guy. At least he served in the trenches, unlike most Democrats running for the job.

ALL these guys deserve a great deal of respect for their service. Even the ones with whom we disagree.

While I salute his service, I will not fall as far as to say that I admire this guy or even "respect" him at all. Just because he served, he does not gain my respect. I served with many that I do not and did not respect. There are others I would kill for.

I credit him with serving, but this is just so much self-serving flatulence. All this shows me is that he once had honor, but that he is not above exploiting others' pain for his own political gain.

This is self serving, Kerry came over as an A$$hole in my VFW Post 90% Viet Nam Vets, me included, mostly Marines and Army, a few swabbies thrown in for balance.

Crap...now I find out I was on operations with this dim wit...makes me glad they only gave my platoon rides on their PBRs and we didn't have hang with them very long...

Third Surg was a nice hospital...air conditioned..inflatable surgical hospital...and not 'make shift'
Dong Tam was the 9th IDs base camp...third Surg was our hospital...(it is still a medical facility to this day...and a giant snake farm)

Some of his other 'facts' seem way drawn out..and as inflated as that hospital...

As far as silent patrolling on the "canals" with a 'swift boat'....no way a swift boat is gonna fit in a typical canal in the Mekong Delta...

And silent patrolling on tributaries...one of our jobs was to set up night ambushes along these
tributaries...down along these estuaries and small tributaries...all of Vietnam was a "Free Fire Zone" from 8PM at night to 6AM the next morning....anything moving and we blew it away..

Coming around by my platoon in the middle of the night in the pitch black dark with a running motor and we could see who it was...would have earned you a couple of claymores..a few HE M-79 rounds a long burst from two M-60s at the minimum...

This whole piece is so disjointed to me ..and bizarre...and example..."the worst thing in the whole world is looking for a dead body cause you never know what you may find"????? HUH?

The sailors and 9th Div troopers who comprised the Mobile Riverine Force Flotilla One were some great troops.... As far as dead bodies were concerned...there were a whole lot worse things in that delta if you were paying attention to them...imo

"Kerry blamed the Johnson Administration. The very week Pershing was killed, General Earle G. Wheeler, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made his eleventh inspection tour of South Vietnam. Kerry suspected that Wheeler would return with the same message as always, telling the American people that their great nation was winning another war, and write up some overoptimistic reports for the White House."

Well, It's easy to see Kerry's problem.

He wanted to be a general, and was in the wrong branch of the service.

Face it. John F. Kerry was never taught, God - Family - Country.

The man has no soul.

I have hated Kerry since he first showed up in his little white sailor suit denigrating the sacrifices that we offered up to insure that a people could live free, commie jerk.

...by the time he got to Vietnam, Pershing had remade himself into the perfect paratrooper, rock-solid in body and stalwart in spirit. And now he was gone—and for what?...

What a ridiculous question.

Pershing died fighting Communism, the greatest evil the world has ever known. I give thanks every day for the freedoms won by the sacrifice of men like him.

Amen. There's far too much universal "respect" afforded to people just because they served. Respect their SERVICE? Yes. Respect HIM or anyone like him? No. I don't care what he did for a few years; I can't respect anyone who now stands for what he stands for.
