WASHINGTON - Michael Moore (news) introduced his Bush-bashing documentary, "Fahrenheit 9/11," to the nation's capital on Wednesday in a private screening for a nearly all-Democratic audience.
Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota and California Sen. Barbara Boxer were among the 800 invited guests. Actress Sally Field (news) also planned to join Moore for the red-carpet premiere.
The two-hour film depicts President Bush (news - web sites) as lazy and oblivious to warnings in the summer of 2001 that al-Qaida was poised to strike. It also accuses the administration of manipulating the Sept. 11 attacks and fanning terrorism fears to win support for the Iraq (news - web sites) war.
"Fahrenheit 9/11" won the top honor at last month's Cannes Film Festival (news - web sites). Moore, a fervent Bush critic, has said he hopes the film will spur more Americans to vote in November.
It opened in limited release in New York on Wednesday, and reaction was mixed.
"This movie is slanted it's a backlash at the president, taking the view that U.S. leadership is incompetent," said Miguel Brown, 22, a production assistant who did not work on the movie. "Moore makes it look like U.S. soldiers in Iraq were thrown into battle straight off the streets. The American army is better than that." Brown is the son of a military officer.
Others applauded Moore.
"I hope this movie aggravates Americans, so that they'll want a change in leadership," said Christina Smart, 31, who has been looking for full-time work since she was laid off from her recording company job.
The movie, which carries an R-rating, opens nationwide on Friday.
Moore and his distributors lost their appeal Tuesday to lower the rating to PG-13.
What, none of the Hezbollah (sp.?) sponsors/promoters?
Hmm...wonder if any enterprising reporter will question these Democrats as to their opinion of Hezbollah's support of Moore ... Naw.
You mean Boxer doesn't count?
I saw John Podesta calling Moore a "documentarian" last night. Podesta is smart enough to know that it was a flat out lie, but like most democrats these days he doesn't intend to let that get in the way.
LOL. I was also thinking of the NY and LA Times, Reuters etc. that tout the freedom fighters of that noble organization...
Perhaps she can find work as an usher in a theatre showing this treasonous garbage.
Well, isn't that nice.
"Invited guests" means exactly nothing. Anybody know who actually showed up? Daschle is from farm country and probably has enough sense not to step in this sort of stuff, but Boxer isn't that smart. Any dem who attended has done a quasi-endorsement and should be pressed hard on it.
it should read
"Moore a fervent BUSH HATER, has said Moore, a fervent Bush critic, has said he hopes the film will spur more Americans to vote in November".
Breaking news for Moore and the Liberals: Forget about it and stop being delusional.
Dung beetle feast
sad. I guess this means the DNC is fully behind this hit piece.
How can they keep calling a bunch of lies and fiction a "documentary"?
At last. Finally. Ive seen FAHRENHEIT 9/11 and frankly, having seen the film, I think the title is all wrong. The temperature at which freedom burns isnt really the goal of the film. Yes, this film does have tangible real world goals, with every sprocket hole, this flick is asking you to not re-elect that Bush dude. This is propaganda.
I love propaganda, its fascinating.
[sniSo how does FAHRENHEIT 9/11 stack up to Capras great work of Propaganda? Well, pretty damn good actually. In some ways, I feel the title of the movie should be: WHY WE VOTE, because honestly thats what this film is about and for. Like Capra, Michael is looking to erase any sense of propriety from this administration. Michael Moore shows the viewer how this isnt just one Bush, but all the Bushes that we need to burn.
If Michael Moores purpose was to reinforce my beliefs that Bush and his cadre of criminals must be removed from office this November, then by golly he succeeded!
Of course, CFR prohibits a Republican from making his own rebuttal film and buying the air time to broadcast it when the election nears.
Funny thing about the First Amendment. Tell the left to STUFF IT when they try to assert that you are denying them "protected Free Speech rights" when you protest this film. You can make a lot of noise but there is nothing you can legally do to physically prevent someone for seeing this film or screening it. The left HAS prevented you from airing a response even if you pay for the forum.
Sheesh. Whatta goofball.
Hooray, for the fringe left coming to the forefront of the opposition party.
By Nov Bush is gonna look like the only "sane" man in the race.
Of course if one wishes to ignore the law well then.....
I'm hoping for some 'rich right winger" money to join the debate.LOL
