Professor disputes Holocaust

By GEORGE A. CHIDI, Rocky Mount Telegram

Saturday, May 21, 2005

The phone call inquiring about Professor Jane Christensen's views on the Holocaust was brief.

Asked directly about her view of the Holocaust — Do you believe that the historic accounts of the Holocaust are true? — Christensen's response was cryptic and evasive.

"Do you mean the Holocaust in Fallujah?" she said.

No.

The question referred to the conventionally held definition of the Holocaust, in which 6 million Jews were killed by Nazis, many in concentration camps. The question was redirected — Do you believe Germany killed 6 million Jews in concentration camps in World War II?

"I believe that Germany killed many people in concentration camps in World War II, and that some of them were Jews," she replied.

Charges of anti-Semitism have been among the accusations leveled at Christensen in recent weeks as bloggers and pundits picked up on her faculty Web site and course syllabus at N.C. Wesleyan College last month.

She also has come under fire because the syllabus of one of her political science classes questions the truth of the U.S. government's accounts of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Her Web page, Megalinks in Political Science, has been retooled since the first columns appeared. Links remain to articles such as "Joint U.S.-Israeli plan to bomb Iran" by Michel Chossudovsky and "Mossad — The Israeli Connection To 9/11" by Christopher Bollyn.

Most of the site consists of links to other writers for other organizations.

A link titled "Mossad Planning Another Attack in U.S." links to an April 11 article by the Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs — a Washington think-tank on U.S.-Israeli military relations — actually titled "Al Qaeda Preparing for Another Attack in U.S., WMD Use Probable."

In a letter to the editor published in the Telegram on May 1, Dr. Ian Newbould said Wesleyan would ask a team of respected political scientists to evaluate the academic appropriateness and integrity of Christensen's approach to teaching. The letter said Christensen suggested the approach would be helpful.

Little of Christensen's own writing appears on the school's Web site. Similarly, Christensen said she hoped little of this conversation would be published.

Finally, the question was rephrased again — Do you believe that the Germans and their allies engaged in a systematic program to kill Jews during World War II?

"If there was a systematic program to kill Jews, it was done in collaboration with the Zionists," Christensen answered.

That sounds like what I've read on a few fringe tinfoil so-called conservative sites, sadly, whose only philosophical belief is that it's all the fault of the JOOOOs.

Actually, the college would very much like to, but it can't. A good friend of mine works at NCWC, and knows all the people involved. He reports that the prof is a harridan in person and an embarrassment to the college, but that she is tenured and cannot be fired without a long, ugly legal battle.

Until recently, such a battle hasn't been worth the time and trouble. However, with ongoing bad press brought on by Dr. Christensen, that may soon change. No one can say what the future holds.

Although not common now, many doctors practicing after WWII will have a story or two about someone being examined and having telltale german script digits tatooed on their wrists. As the eyewitnesses and survivors die, the more the denialists will come out of the woodwork.

Outside of the obvious... there's an elipse I detect in her "evasive" answers. Other than Jews being murdered... there were gays rounded up. Scott Lively, author "Pink Swastika" has excellent data and reference points for this. Basically, the butch faction of brownshirters went after the more effeminate gays, rounded them up. They had been brawling over "politics" in Germany. I wonder if this is a part of the "professors" evasive answer. If she can instantly quip that "fallujah" = "holocaust"... I'm already seeing the rest of her script...

Letter: Panel to evaluate political science course

By Dr. Ian Newbould, Rocky Mount

Tuesday, May 03, 2005

During the past few weeks, the Web site of Dr. Jane Christensen, who teaches political science at N.C. Wesleyan College, has attracted a great deal of attention.

Following board discussion of the issues, the college's position is as follows.

N.C. Wesleyan College seeks to foster freedom of expression and freedom of inquiry. The college believes that the students' educational experience should include a balanced and open approach to learning.

As a United Methodist institution, we value diversity of opinion. The college fosters just and fair treatment for all groups in our society and does not condone hatred or violence of any kind. We seek to foster Judeo-Christian values. We value First Amendment rights and academic freedom for our faculty and students.

Wesleyan is among the many colleges that permit faculty and students to create personal Web pages that can be accessed through the college's homepage. These personal pages represent the views of the individuals who create them, not the views of the college.

Professor Christensen's views are not those held by the overwhelming majority of Americans. She presents alternative views that many find repugnant. There is no question but that students in her classes hear views and opinions different from the mainstream. It should be noted that our students are intelligent and thoughtful. They can, and often do, disagree with Professor Christensen, without academic penalty. Many find themselves upset at the opinion and commentary that they are uncritical, or can be brainwashed.

As an institution, we do not require our faculty or students to accept, or reject, any particular academic or political theory. We endeavor to ensure, however, that what is taught accords with the standards of each profession and discipline. In response to the many concerns raised about Dr. Christensen's coursework, N.C. Wesleyan College will be asking a team of respected political scientists to evaluate, out of the glare of publicity, the academic appropriateness and integrity of Professor Christensen's approach to teaching. Dr. Christensen has also suggested that this approach would be helpful. Sound and thoughtful review by external examination will guide our approach to this matter.

President of Wesleyan College
Dr. Ian D.C. Newbould

Wow! That kind of circular reasoning usually only shows up in far right-wing froot loops. I guess this just supports the old adage that the difference between the extreme left and the extreme right is only a hair's breadth wide. They are both bound by fascism.

# re: Another Crazy Professor: Jane Christensen

Castalia

We had a City Councilwoman here in our town... Jane Christensen. When I attended our local council meetings... there was always this very angry, disheveled woman, who did not want blacks to talk in the meetings, and got angry and stormed out whenever things didn't go her way. It took some doing, but we voted her out of our town council. Boy, did that make her angry. We have a fireworks display here every July 4th - always held in the same church field. After Jihad Jane was removed from her city GOVERNMENT position, she was absolutely furious! She filed a lawsuit against our tiny town claiming that paper had fallen onto her fields and she couldn't get her crop in. Our mayor offered to pick up papers for her... but that wasn't good enough. She filed a LAWSUIT. Don't you just love it when people who are always whining about our government and laws, use them to achieve their own narrow minded means? The lawsuit was dismissed on the local level as being frivolous. Not good enough for Jane. Now she has her sights on moving up the judicial ladder with it. This woman loves to fight and create animosity. I know. I am her neighbor. My daughter is a graduate of Wesleyan College. We are regular contributors. Not any more. This woman has a personality disorder hiding behind a degree she achieved before her mental illness poisoned her entire mind. I certainly don't want her teaching my children that everything is a lie and we are a horrible country with no future. Alternative viewpoints are fine and necessary, but using them to promote an agenda of hate in a classroom setting borders on the criminal.

1) It's NOT UNCW. It's NC Wesleyan.

2) For the most part, the administration lets the teachers run their own classes. But, heaven forbid a teacher actually cross enough of the students to have them go to the administration in a group. We had a teacher who was supposed to be teaching ethics and spent a lot of time berating conservatives. I finally stood up in one of the classes and told him to his face "You may be able to intimidate some of the students, but you can't cow us all. And we're going to the administration to have a talk about your 'ethics' of your class." I showed up with about 3-4 other class members, and the next class he was back to the book, didn't stray to political commentary for the rest of the semester and did not return the following semester to teach.

NCWC is actually a good, though expensive school. It is private. And they will tolerate a lot, just not irritating the students. As a private school, they understand that the students are their customers. So, if enough students got together to complain about her class activities (not extraneous ones, but in-class only) tenured or not, she'd be out of the teaching of students.

Paul

The question referred to the conventionally held definition of the Holocaust

I believe in "the Holocaust", but it still bothers me a little that the word 'holocaust', which once had a general meaning, has been co-opted to apply to this one historical event.

Specific targeting of Jews prior to the Third Reich were called pogroms. It was the massive scale of this particular pogrom that led to the usage of the word holocaust. But if you don't like "holocaust", you could use "shoah", many Jews use "shoah" to refer to their planned systematic extermination by the Nazis.

Personally, I don't know why it would bother you, but it's a free country.
