Iraq better off under Saddam, says Blix

Former United Nations chief weapons inspector Hans Blix on Wednesday described the United States-led invasion of Iraq as a "pure failure" that had left the country worse off than under the rule of Saddam Hussein.

In unusually harsh comments to Danish newspaper Politiken, the diplomatic Swede said the US government had ended up in a situation in which neither staying nor leaving Iraq were good options.

"Iraq is a pure failure," Blix was quoted as saying. "If the Americans pull out, there is a risk that they will leave a country in civil war. At the same time, it doesn't seem that the United States can help to stabilise the situation by staying there."

War-related violence in Iraq has grown worse, with dozens of civilians, government officials and police and security force members being killed every day. At least 83 US soldiers have been killed in October - the highest monthly toll in 2006.

Blix said the situation would have been better if the war had not taken place.

"Saddam would still have been sitting in office. Okay, that is negative and it would not have been joyful for the Iraqi people. But what we have gotten is undoubtedly worse," he was quoted as saying.

Blix led the UN inspectors that searched for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq before the US-led invasion in 2003. He came under heavy fire from Washington when he urged US President George Bush to allow the weapons inspectors and the International Atomic Energy Agency to continue their work as a way to stave off a war.

Ultimately a US-led coalition invaded Iraq and no such weapons were found. - Sapa-AP

Let's put a little perspective on this and it might explain his mentality. Hans Blix is from Sweden.

During WWII, "the policy of Sweden during World War II was to remain neutral. When hostilities began on 1 September 1939, the fate of Sweden was unclear." An important factor that allowed them to maintain neutrality "was the concessions the Swedish government was forced to make to Germany, such as allowing the Wehrmacht to use Swedish railways to transport an infantry division from Norway to Finland, and to transport soldiers on leave between Norway and Germany. However, Sweden's inability to take a stand was partly related to her geographical position (as opposed to that of Great Britain), and can also be related to what is a typical cultural tendency in Sweden: to avoid conflict and confrontation as much as possible, which for non-Swedes is and was difficult to understand. Sweden's cooperation with Germany was not worse than that of many other countries in Europe, and one might argue that Sweden, while never invaded, was more or less occupied by default." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden_during_World_War_II

In Blix's mind, it was better to let Hitler run through his nation, exterminating jews, and basically destroying Europe. Blix needs to be tried and shot.

If the Dems had their way...this guy would STILL be the weapons inspector....and Saddam would be in power.

While Blixie would be going in the front door of a building to inspect...Saddam would be shuffling his weapons, and the money from the OFF program out the back...and on the way...killing a few more thousand Iraqis...

All in a day's work.

The way the MoHamHead population is increasing in Sweeden, Hans will have an opportunity to live under a MoHamHead dictator or Sharia law real soon.

Let him comment on the benefits of living under Saddam's bootheel then.

Put the question this way: If after WWII, Germany had erupted into partisan violence or civil war, would Blix have claimed the country was better off under Hitler?

Someone should ask him exactly that.

What does a Swede know or care about freedom? Their chains rest lightly upon them, and always have.

There are a lot of people out there who believe nothing is wrong, unless the United States does it. If the United States does it, then everything is wrong.

I sure it was. As long as you weren't one of the Iraqis being jailed, raped, tortured, murdered, spied on, and otherwise oppressed I've no doubt life was just fine. Problem is that that group comprised Saddam, his boys, and some of their family members and that was about it.

The Kurds and most Shi'ites would disagree with that.

Where was Hans Brix in the late 1980s when his idol Saddam used WMDs on not only his own people, but also on the Iranians as well?
