Boehner, House Republican Leaders Call for Federal Spending Freeze

Boehner, House Republican Leaders Call for Federal Spending Freeze to Address Growing Budget Deficit

Democratic Leaders Should Scrap Bill that Contains Biggest Discretionary Spending Hike Since Jimmy Carter, Pass Clean Bill That Holds Line on Government Spending, GOP Leaders Urge

Washington, Feb 23 - As Washington leaders gather for a White House summit on fiscal responsibility, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and other House Republican leaders today wrote to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), calling for a federal spending freeze and urging Democratic congressional leaders to scrap a massive bill that contains the largest increase in non-entitlement spending since the Carter Administration. Congress should scrap the so-called “omnibus” bill, which has been kept hidden from public scrutiny by Democratic leaders, and instead pass clean legislation that holds the line on federal spending, Republican leaders said.

“President Obama has called for both parties to get serious about fiscal responsibility. With our budget deficit potentially reaching $3 trillion this year, Republicans stand ready to work with him, and we believe we should start right now,” Boehner said. “Democratic congressional leaders should abandon their plans to rush another giant spending increase through Congress without public scrutiny, and instead pass a clean bill that freezes spending at current levels. Republicans stand ready to work with our Democratic colleagues and the President to take this first step toward a new standard of fiscal discipline in Washington.”

“Weeks ago House Republicans asked Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Hoyer to put this giant spending bill online so the American people would have adequate time to review it. Unfortunately, they declined. And on Friday, it was revealed that the bill congressional Democrats have been withholding from public view contains the largest discretionary spending increase since the Carter Administration, at a time when the federal budget deficit is already ballooning to dangerous levels,” Boehner said. “Democratic congressional leaders are reportedly rushing this bill to a vote this week, just days after passing a trillion-dollar ‘stimulus’ spending bill that no Member of Congress had even read. This is not fiscal responsibility; it is fiscal negligence, paid for by our children and grandchildren. We must change course, and we must do it in a bipartisan manner.”

NOTE: The giant spending bill kept under wraps by Democratic leaders would fund the nine uncompleted Fiscal Year 2009 appropriations bills that the Democratic Congress did not send to the President last year. Many taxpayer advocates argue that instead of rolling the nine appropriations bills into one giant “omnibus” bill that increases federal spending on an array of programs and projects at a time of growing budget deficits, Congress should simply pass a resolution that holds government spending at current levels.

BOHICA.

I actually faxed my Congress Critter and Senators a letter this morning about this "Omnibus Spending Bill." I strongly suggested the Republicans submit an alternative that holds spending to FY 2008 levels for the remainder of FY 2009.

I also advised that the Republicans should boycott any vote taken prior to posting this spending bill publicly on the Internet for a reasonable time for public review (days, not hours).

Any chance we can clone Bobby Jindal and have him be spokesmen for these people? John Boehner and Mitch McConnell kind of pathetic spokesmen for the conservative movement.

Yes, and no.

It's something the media can't hide. If the Republicans stayed to force the roll call vote, and then walked out, the vote would be on the record as only democrats present.

And it might be newsworthy enough that the Party Propaganda Ministry (formerly known as the media) might have to actually report it.

I think it might make people more aware of what's going on.

John Boehner has done great since Obama took office. He held every whole house republican firm against Obama’s porkulus bill and even got a few Democrats to oppose.

They deserve our thanks..not our scorn. McConnell, we have to watch(I agree)...but he did manage to hold the senate republicans together except the 3 rinos Obama was able to bribe or threaten.

Hmmm...I don't know. Two historic losses in a row I think are pretty scorn-worthy.

Yes and I am also aware that John Boehner had nothing to do with us being in the minority. I mean, except for the fact that he was leader.

It's "moaning and complaining" to call for different leadership from the one that led us into two successive historically large losses?

By that logic Lincoln should've stopped moaning and complaining and just kept the same Generals that weren't doing the job.

We DID call for different leadership in the house. They did not listen to us. Now we have to watch them...praise them when they do good...berate them when they don’t. I don’t know what else we can do. Boehner did good on the porkulus bill...for some reason you are refusing to admit it. He also did very good on the ‘oil debate’ last fall.

Boehner and Mcconnell may not be the ideal Republicans. They all should have done better when they were in control. Both of these things are true.

That's also in the past and there is not a blessed thing anyone can do to change it. All we can do is what you said. Praise when they do it right, berate when they go astray.

We have to train them the same way you train a dog not to pee on the floor, or your kids not to use permanent magic marker on your newly painted walls. Positive reinforcement when called for and negative when called for.

We lost the elections badly. They've already decided on the party leadership. Continuing to harp on those things does nothing to help. When those fights come up again, we'll fight them again.

Today, we need to help them fight their fights with the dems because that's what they need most right now. They need US to provide them with a backbone to do the right thing. They shouldn't but they do.

The problem is, they ALWAYS say the right things when they're in the minority and/or they're up for reelection. So what is your motto: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me thrice, and again, and again, and again...you better not fool me again mister"?

So your plan is to whine and complain at them regardless? Throw all the bums out regardless? Sorry, but that’s a loser of a plan. The party seems to understand that it needs to be phoenix rising from the ashes of the 2008 disaster. Hopefully it finds its message and messenger...and then sticks to it when it recaptures power. I think they understand now that if voters get the option between half-hearted-liberal-lite-republicans and full-liberal-dems, they’ll choose the dems....but if they get conservative vs. liberal, they’ll choose differently.

Part of the problem was that Bush was not fiscally conservative. If he were, he could have cajoled, forced and armtwisted the rest of the republicans to follow. Instead, he spent like a drunken liberal and the rest of the party enjoyed the ride of “I can only get votes by promising my people more and more from government”.

By the time the 2010 election rolls around the Republican platform should be “Getting government out of your life”
