THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS
Japan plans to turn over to the United States more than 700 pounds of weapons grade plutonium and a supply of highly-enriched uranium, a victory for President Barack Obama's efforts to secure nuclear materials around the world.
Despite its international pledge not to possess excess stock of plutonium, Japan has large amounts of the weapons-grade material. The amount to be returned to the U.S. this time is a fraction of Japan's overall stockpile.
Even though the majority of Japan's public favor nuclear phase-out, the government recently introduced a draft long-term energy policy proposing maintaining nuclear power as a key energy source, while promising to pursue fuel recycling program. Officials argue they can eventually take care of the plutonium issue, but it is highly uncertain because of lingering uncertainty surrounding reactor restarts.

Gloved hands holding a "button" of plutonium
I’m certain that the great leader can count on jumpin joe biden ..with his vast storehouse of knowledge on nuclear science..to handle all the important details of this matter.
That sure worked out well for the Ukrainians, didn’t it?
The Japanese undoubtedly are not going to be giving up _all_ of their plutonium. One could scarcely believe that they’d trust this administration with their survival.
Could swear we already made them say “Uncle”....
How bout we focus on Iran, Barry....
Will they give it to the Iranians and their “peaceful” nuke program?
Well, we got 700 pounds of their flesh...
Only an idiot would think that is all of it.
They know they cannot rely on Obunghole to back them up and are on their own with China and NK.
700 pounds is a drop in the bucket. Nobody knows how large Japan’s stockpile is because there has never been a full inspection — and there never will be.
This is pretty much just throwing Obama a bone to get him to be quiet.
Bad move Japan.
Obama already said that he would not respond with nuclear weapons even if a US city was nuked. Don’t expect him to come to your aid should the worse happen.
You have a rabid dog in Korea firing missiles over your head and threatening you and you are going to hand your only deterrent to Obama?
Not only that but territorial disputes with a rising and increasingly militaristic China - a China where the average citizen has an almost irrational, murderous hatred of the Japanese.
Ask the Ukrainians about what a great idea it is to give your nuclear weapons to another country.
I just hope they don’t ship it via a 777.
Looks to me link Japan is just getting rid of 700 pounds of toxic waste for free.
Not a bad thing for Japan. It becomes our problem.
