Environmental samples have been taken at a sensitive military site in Iran, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog said on Monday, citing "significant progress" in its investigation of Tehran's past activities.
Such sampling is usually done by experts of the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency. But IAEA chief Yukiya Amano says that Iranians carried out that part of the probe at Parchin. The transfer appeared to be part of a confidential draft agreement with the agency that allows Iran to gather its own samples.
Inspecting the Parchin military site is a crucial part of the International Atomic Energy Agency's investigation of whether Iran previously carried out work related to developing nuclear weapons. The IAEA has not visited Parchin in a decade.
The agency is due to provide an assessment of "possible military dimensions" of Iran's nuclear program by the end of the year. That report is vital to Iran's breakthrough deal with major powers, under which limits will be placed on Tehran's atomic activities in exchange for a lifting of sanctions.
Amano said he and the head of the agency's Department of Safeguards, which carries out inspections, visited a building at the Parchin site on Sunday that the agency had previously only observed by satellite.
"Inside the building, we saw indications of recent renovation work," Amano said in a statement he read to reporters in Vienna, where his agency is based. "There was no equipment in the building."
The IAEA did not identify the building or its location within the sprawling complex at Parchin, where Western intelligence has suggested Tehran carried out tests relevant to nuclear bomb detonations more than a decade ago. Iran has dismissed the intelligence as "fabricated".

Okay, class. You get to grade your own final exam. Please don’t cheat.
Why did GOPe in the Senate change this TREATY to a statute? What was their motive?
The worst negotiated deal in the history of the United States...
Because Commander Xero said he would implement it without the Senate as an executive agreement.
It’s going to be interesting to see how people deal with Obama and Kerry in the future if terrorists detonate a nuclear bomb that kills a few million and the bomb is traced to Iran.
Parchin or Potemkin?
Gog and Magog and more terrorism. Brought to you by $150 billion dollars and a deal. Or should I say, finishing work financed and road paved.
WHO CARE WHAT HE DOES? there is a constitution!! I hate these republicrat cowards!!!
About which Xero cares not a whit.
I hate these republicrat cowards!!!
Their only other option is impeachment. What would you do in their position? Arrest him?
“Their only other option is impeachment. What would you do in their position? Arrest him?”
I have an idea— stop the GD FUNDING!!
Unless I am mistaken, most of the damage Xero can do re lifting the sanctions is not constrained by "the GD FUNDING." Moreover the EU is lifting theirs anyway.
Ok Karl . You win. Be sure you signed the pledge!!
