Captains of German industry to accompany Merkel on Trump trip

Bosses of German companies including engineering group Siemens (SIEGn.DE) and carmaker BMW (BMWG.DE) will travel with Chancellor Angela Merkel to meet U.S. President Donald Trump this week, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Faced with Trump's "America First" policy and threats to impose tariffs on imported goods, the captains of industry will stress how many U.S. jobs are tied to "Deutschland AG".

Trains-to-turbines group Siemens employs more than 50,000 people in the United States, its single biggest market, where it makes 21 percent of its total revenue, while BMW's South Carolina plant is its largest factory anywhere in the world.

Trump said this meeting was postponed until Friday because of the weather. Interesting that the captains of the German industry will be accompanying her. Hopefully more winning by President Trump.

Yeah, but if that's what Trump demanded before he'd negotiate, well, you gotta do what you gotta do. Maybe he could put them up on display in one of the tour areas.

The word “debate” give the impression that the Germans have a say in the decision process of America’s economy and foreign relations. A better word to use would be “discuss”. I am getting so sick of pompous Eurotrash.

The Germans have a $65 billion annual trade surplus with the US. In 2016, we exported $49 billion while importing $114 billion in German goods and services.

The Germans depend on exports to a far greater degree than we do.

They all were super-heated of Trump during his election campaign and I hope he sends em home with their tails between their legs. “less han an hour” with Trump is more than they deserve. And, most likely, Merkel, an uber Liberal, is on the way out the door anyway.

Yup, but BMW and Siemens have significant investment and American employment here. I think this is a brilliant move on Trump's part.

I think he will thank them for partnering with us and inquire how we can further leverage future win/win trade positions benefitting the US And Germany.

Trump eats this stuff up. 😁

Yup

German companies produce a heck of a lot in the US and export a heck of a lot FROM their US factories. The discussion betweeen the German CEOs and Trump will be how to increase German enterprise within the US.

The discussion with Merkel will be interesting. Trump can’t be seen to beat up too much on Merkel. She is facing a tough re election campaign back home. Her opponent is a looney international socialist. Trump is smart enough not to hurt Merkel’s election chances.

PRESIDENT TRUMP....is going to Willow Run, the biggest bomber factory the world had ever seen ....”A Bomber an Hour” was their slogan and they did it...every hour every day every week every month.
America was great then.

JFK challenged US to put a man on the moon. We did it.
America was great then.

Both times we as a nation had a goal...to lead the world through hard work and sacrifice...to accomplish the seemingly impossible, first stopping the Nazi and the Rising Sun, and then a few decades later, putting a man on the moon. It is time for a new mission for America.......... ....what will it be?

Trump has hit Merkel repeatedly on her stupid decision to flood Germany with ME migrants. The German people are fed up with this former communist from East Germany. She needs to go regardless of who replaces her. She has been a disaster for Germany and Europe. Her migrant policy may very well take down all of Europe. Demography is destiny.

Fretting over Frau Merkel’s loony international socialist opponent in the upcoming election is sort of odd, since she herself was born and raised behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany. People forget that. One look at her disdain for the (formerly West) German flag tells you all that you need to know, in my opinion.

There are populist, nationalist movements building in all of those nations, they’re foolish in the extreme in being dismissive. If they hate Trump so much, they need to understand the years of anger and frustration that led to his becoming a viable candidate and getting elected against all apparent odds. It’s there, there too.

What the hell? What does that have to do with anything? A trade tariff doesn't affect German products made in the USA for the US domestic market. Also it is unconstitutional to tariff exports from the USA so I do not understand why Al Reuters thought this is important to know.

If their trade policies with the US are fair and equitable they have no cause for concern. If they’re placing a severe handicap on US imports, then the possibility exists of reciprocation.
