Radiation leak at North Korean nuclear test site 'inevitable', says Chinese expert
By Neil Connor, beijing
5 SEPTEMBER 2017
A radiation leak at the site of North Koreas massive bomb test is inevitable, a Chinese nuclear weapons expert warned, after authorities in China reported that the mountain where the explosion took place had collapsed.
Chinas Earthquake Network Centre said a second 4.6 magnitude earthquake tremor happened eight minutes after Sundays initial explosion, which measured 6.3 magnitude.
Authorities in China said the tremor could be a result of a cave in, a potentially devastating collapse of the mountain at the Punggye-ri test site, where North Korean tests its weapons underground.
Wei Shijie, who worked on Chinas nuclear weapons programme from 1964 to 1990 and is often quoted on the subject in Chinese media, said: When I heard there could have been a collapse, it made me so concerned because it means the problem is quite serious and a nuclear leak is inevitable.
But even if the mountain did not cave-in, a leak will definitely happen, added Mr Wei.
It is just a matter of time to detect it, because there are cracks on mountains where radioactive substances will leak, the retired scientist told The Telegraph.
Mr Wei also dismissed the results of Chinese monitoring of its border areas with North Korea which concluded that no atmospheric radiation was detected. Japanese sniffer aircraft also recorded no abnormalities.
It is normal after only two days, he said. But I am sure radioactive substances will be detected.
The big concern is the underground water will be contaminated, polluting the plants and animals, and finally the people who consume animal meat will be seriously impacted.

A nuclear accident and resulting release of radioactive matters fits this profile perfectly. N. Korea also has a nuclear reactor whose safety is a real question mark.
We should wait until it is leaking high levels of radiation, then blow it up.
The US is busy assessing and I’m betting we have boots on the ground...
Time to erase that government and family from history.
We need to soften this up with Moabs and bunker busters. We dont need another Afghanistan.
I don’t know the importance of this “retired scientist”. But a Chinese statement some weeks back listed a leak or fallout into China as something the Chicoms would not accept.
Thanks, Obama/Hillary/Bush/McCain/Pelosi, etc....
While you fools were off playing games, a madman was building an arsenal to kill millions!
Although I only reached the lofty rank of SP5 during my stellar Army career even I know that this won't be resolved by "boot on the ground".It would have to be the job of the Navy and/or Air Force.
Are you trying to tell us that a slave state has low environmental standards? Who knew?
I've thought the very same thing. It seems to me that that would be an added incentive for the Chicoms to take their little poodle aside and explain a few things to him.
I agree....Just talking recon....
Maybe this accounts for Putin’s tweet this morning about a non nuclear North Korea
Russia needs its warm water port on the Pacific
Just not THAT warm
Sounds like a YP(Your Problem), not a MP(My Problem).
What we have here in this statement is justification.
China is now justified in doing harm to North Korea.
“...Im betting we have boots on the ground...”
I’m betting the Chinese have boots on the ground to take care of Fat Boy.
As terrifying as radiation leaks could potentially be, it might be something like this to make China come around to our way of thinking. They start leaking radiation into the air and both China and Russia are going to sit up and take notice. On a map, you can see this is in the northern part of North Korea, near the border with China and Russia. Far away from Pyonyang....
....”authorities in China reported that the mountain where the explosion took place had collapsed”....
Saw satellite photos of the collapsed areas earlier today but failed to snatch them.....I’m sure Fat Boy and his co-horts didn’t figure this in to their equation.
