Washington (CNN)FBI Director Christopher Wray defended his agency Thursday in his first public appearance since President Donald Trump said the bureau is "in tatters."
Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Virginia, asked Wray about what he's doing to clear the ranks of the FBI by people "tainted" by bias.
"I think these matters are being looked at, as they should be, by somebody outside the FBI, and when those findings come to me, I will take appropriate action if necessary," Wray said, referencing the ongoing inspector general investigation. "The first thing I'm doing is respecting the outside independent investigations that are underway. ... My preference is to be one of these people who is not an act first and ask questions later guy."....
GOP Rep. Steve King, of Iowa, pressed Wray on the decision to change former FBI Director James Comey's statement on Clinton's email investigation to say Clinton had been "extremely careless" rather than "grossly negligent." He was referencing how an early draft of a memo by Comey described the behavior of Clinton as "grossly negligent" for her handling of classified information, though Comey in his July 5, 2016, public statement didn't use that term.
"Gross negligence is the language in the statute I believe," Wray said. "But I believe also that almost anybody who grabbed a thesaurus would say that gross negligence and extremely careless are pretty darn close to each other."

Actually, they are not that 'close' at all... If they were then Hillary should have obviously been charged with a crime, and if she were not, then there would have been hell to pay since that 'is' the language in the statute.
Not sure what Christopher Wray's intentions are, but if Andrew Weissmann from the Department of Justice, Mueller's lieutenant and ardent admire of Sally Yates the AG that Trump fired and Peter Strzok, an FBI agent who is obviously a Clinton lap dog aren't fired and removed from Mueller's team pronto, then you can expect Trump to start swinging and making some serious blows to this tainted politically motivated inquisition.
Wray is a total Cesspool ‘gator. No a surprise.
Who promoted this ‘critter to Trump?
Well spoken and slick. “...gross negligence and extremely careless are pretty darn close to each other...”
Politicians who are not familiar with biology can’t distinguish slime eels from lampreys. The swamp is inhabited by many non-native species.
extremely careless is when I chip the family heirloom china. Gross negligence is when I leave the top secret war plan on the bus. Treason is when I sell it to a Russian spy.
Mr. Wray is an attorney and knows full well that the law is technical and turns on precise definitions of language.
That he tries to submerge it all in fuzzy equivalences shows he’s equivocating himself.
Of course he does.
The question is why they are working Wray over and not the specific
hacks like Stzok.
Wray is another swamp Rat. He got a LOT got Rat votes to confirm, when l saw that l knew Trump made another bad appointment. The bad picks and the Obongo holdovers have really hurt. Hes doing a great job but these things have caused many problems.
[”Gross negligence is the language in the statute I believe,” Wray said. “But I believe also that almost anybody who grabbed a thesaurus would say that gross negligence and extremely careless are pretty darn close to each other.”]
Spoken like someone who would protect Hillary. At least it sounds like that to me.
“Wray is another swamp Rat”
I continue to be shocked at how dreadful many of Trump’s appointmens are. Really, really awful. I’ve always believed he had a sixth sense about “reading” people and choosing the best of the best. So not true.
Not close at all, because one (grossly negligent) is the legal definition that constitutes a crime, and the other (extremely careless) is just a personal opinion.
Hillary instructed Huma to strip the classified headers so she could leak priviledged information.
FBI is corrupt AF.
Throughout he almost visibly recoiled at conservative Qs but was warm and sunny with liberals.
Grossly negligent implies accidental, Hillary was hellbent on doing what lobbyists wanted.
Hillary was neither negligent nor careless.
It was a calculated move to hide the pay-for-play of The Clinton Foundation and her other antics.
Then, she and her goons destroyed evidence of their crimes; multiple times.
Those that covered for her are complicit in those crimes.
You mean like James Comey? Exonerate first then 'investigate?'
I am going to tell you one more time don’t act silly on FR do a search on Wray, he is an outsider, saying all he can to put the bait out...
FWIW - Gregg Jarrett said that it is a standard jury instruction that the two phrases are synonymous.
if it wasn’t important then why change it?
it was the language in the statute and changing it would muddy the waters for non-lawyers...
Wray acts like a Deep Swamp critter, has a history as a Deep Swamp critter, but is not a Deep swamp critter?
Wray is that you?
We finally get the People’s President, and this Swampster is the best we can find for FBI Director? Shut the whole thing down and if needed, hire young grads from Christian universities, Mennonites, and the Amish!
