That part of the choir near the altar of a church, where the clergy officiate in liturgical ceremonies. The name comes from cancellus, the screen that formerly divided the choir from the nave. (Etym. Latin cancellus, a screen.)

I did a quick perusal of the dictionary and both words have the same derivation. chancery <- chancelrie <- chancel etc.

Didn’t realize the difference between chancel and chancelry either.
