A Senate poll released less than 24 hours before polls open Tuesday finds that former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore still has a substantial lead over U.S. Sen. Luther Strange in the Republican primary runoff. It also indicates that President Trump's visit to Huntsville for a campaign rally for Strange did not give the president's preferred candidate a noticeable boost in the eyes of voters.

President Trump says he doesn't know much about Roy Moore, and seemed to unwittingly emphasize the point by twice referring to the Republican front-runner for Senate in Alabama as "Ray" during a radio interview on the "Rick and Bubba Show" ahead of Tuesday's primary, per Politico. Moore is up against incumbent Sen. Luther Strange, who Trump has publicly endorsed. "Luther Strange is going to be a great senator. He loves Alabama, he loves the states and he loves the country," Trump said Monday, according to AL.com. "He will absolutely win against the Democrat. Ray will have a hard time. If...

As the discourse rolls on regarding former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick‘s decision to take a knee during the national anthem–and the movement his protest ignited–support for the blacklisted athlete-cum-activist is sprouting up across the country. Yesterday afternoon, on Twitter, some of that support came from U.S. Army Infantry Officer and U.S. Military Academy at West Point alumnus, Spenser Rapone. Rapone posts under the handle @punkproletarian and is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America. Under the hashtag #VeteransForKaepernick, he tweeted an image of himself raising the left clenched-fist of solidarity, support and resistance as well as the message, “Communism...

Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Left tackle Alejandro Villanueva surprised his Pittsburgh Steelers teammates Sunday when he stood in the tunnel for the national anthem at Soldier Field. Several Steelers players told ESPN that they expected the entire team to stay in the locker room -- as planned -- for the pregame song. But the former Army Ranger decided to walk out of the locker room and stand in the tunnel with his hand over his chest during the rendition. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin stood on his team's sideline during the song, without his team behind him. Villanueva served multiple terms...

NFL players engaged in widespread demonstrations on Sunday, hours after President Donald Trump called on the league’s owners to fire ‘son of a [expletive]’ who kneel during the pregame national anthem. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and the vast majority of the league’s 32 owners issued statements in solidarity with players and condemned Trump for engaging in divisive rhetoric. “We talk to our sponsors all the time, whether it’s raining or the sun is out. "The whole world should clearly remember it was the U.S. who first declared war on our country," Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told reporters in New York. "Since the United States declared war on our country, we will have every right to make countermeasures, including the right to shoot down United States strategic bombers even when they...

Angela Merkel has won a fourth term, but official results have shown she'll have a "tough road" for coalition talks. While the CDU remains the largest party, the far-right AfD will be the third biggest political force. With all 299 constituencies reporting, Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian sister party the CSU came out ahead in Germany's national election on Sunday, with 33 percent of the vote. Rival Social Democrats (SPD) led by Martin Schulz tumbled to a mere 20.5 percent, while the Green and Left parties remained about the same as they did in 2013,...

IRBIL, Iraq (AP) — Iraq’s Kurdish region’s controversial vote on independence will go ahead as planned on Monday, despite mounting pressure to call off the referendum, the region’s president said at a press conference in Irbil Sunday. Donald Trump has renewed his attack on NFL stars kneeling during the national anthem, by urging fans to stop going to games "until players stop disrespecting our Flag & Country". In tweets posted on Sunday morning, the US President told fans if they boycott matches "you will see change take place fast. Fire or suspend!" He added: "...NFL attendance and ratings are WAY DOWN. A magnitude 3.4 earthquake has been detected in North Korea. The earthquake occurred about 50km (31 miles) from a nuclear test site, monitors say. Previous quakes were caused by weapon tests. Chinese seismologists said it was a "suspected explosion" but South Korea says that it could be a natural quake not caused by a nuclear test. The US Geological Survey (USGS), meanwhile, said it could not yet make a judgment as to the cause. North Korea carried out a massive nuclear test on 3 September which was widely condemned at the UN. The size of Saturday's tremor is smaller than...
