  • (Minnesota) Vikings Hold First Sports LGBTQ Summit

    06/21/2018 12:08:44 PM PDT · by MplsSteve · 39 replies
The Minnesota Vikings made history on Thursday. Vikings players, coaches and members of the LGBTQ community came together for a first of its kind inclusion summit held by an NFL team. The LGBTQ summit and fundraising event was held at the TCO Performance Center Auditorium in Eagan. It centered around bridging the gap between the LGBTQ community and sports. In front of a packed crowd, former and current LGBTQ athletes shared stories about how they were criticized for who they loved while playing the sport they love. The event featured four panel discussions. Each one about an hour long.

An openly gay Pennsylvania lawmaker has drawn backlash after he “welcomed” Vice President Mike Pence to Philadelphia with a picture of himself flipping the bird. “Get bent, then get out!” state Rep. Brian Sims, of Philadelphia, wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday ahead of Mr. Pence’s visit to a fundraiser for Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Wagner. “Vice President Mike Pence, let me be the first person to officially welcome you to the City of Brotherly Love, and to my District in the State House!” Mr. Sims wrote. “To be clear, we’re a City of soaring diversity. We believe in the...

As people around the world don rainbow swag in celebration of International Pride, the World Health Organization (WHO) has come out with an announcement of its own. For the first time since 1992, the organization issued a major revision to its international manual of diagnoses and, among other things, a major shift in the way transgender people are treated. The 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) reframes “gender identity disorder” as “gender incongruence”, moving it from a mental health disorder to an issue of sexual health. Codes issued by the ICD are used by countries to determine...

With national attention focused on the forced separation of families at America's southern border, this week isn't a very good week to be a Trump administration official (not that most are, of course). So it's not surprising that Veep Mike Pence was greeted by vocal protests when he swung through Philadelphia on Tuesday night to campaign on behalf of Republican governor candidate Scott Wagner. Some, such as state Rep. Brian Sims, D-Philadelphia, were slightly more emphatic in their opposition.

A former Union High School teacher who resigned nearly six years ago after posting anti-gay comments on social media has settled her long-standing lawsuit against the district for $132,500. Jenye "Viki" Knox will receive $24,500 for back wages, $63,833.33 for claims of emotional distress and $44,166.67 for attorney's fees, according to court papers. The news was first reported by NJ Civil Settlements, which compiles a partial list of settlements paid by New Jersey government agencies and their insurers to those who have sued them. Knox, a 56-year-old Union Township resident who taught special education, described homosexuality as a "perverted spirit"...

Star Daniella Pineda says that insight into her character was removed for time. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom reportedly passed on an opportunity to add a bit more representation to its storyline. Star Daniella Pineda said in an interview with Build that a line of dialogue that was cut from the film would have revealed her character Zia Rodriguez was a lesbian. "I understood why they cut it — for sake of time. It's me and Chris Pratt and we are in a military vehicle with all of these mercenaries," she told Build. "I look at Chris and am like, 'Yeah....

Kylie Jenner wished her dad a happy Father’s Day in a sweet Instagram post and the Internet totally freaked out. Many accused Kylie of being transphobic because the makeup mogul shared a pre-op, throwback photo of her father, formerly known as Bruce Jenner. “So lucky to have you,” the 20-year-old reality star captioned the photo. We do know that Kylie’s father is totally fine with being called “dad,” and has said so on a number of occasions. But that didn’t stop a lot of people from losing their minds. Instagram user mala.vidaaWonder wrote: “if it bothers Caitlyn to still be...

LONDON — Women must be at the heart of climate action if the world is to limit the deadly impact of disasters such as floods, former Irish president and U.N. rights commissioner Mary Robinson said on Monday. Robinson, also a former U.N. climate envoy, said women were most adversely affected by disasters and yet are rarely "put front and center" of efforts to protect the most vulnerable. "Climate change is a man-made problem and must have a feminist solution," she said at a meeting of climate experts at London's Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Entrepreneurship. "Feminism doesn't mean excluding men,...

The royal family held a historic wedding this spring with the nuptials of Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle, but there's about to be one more "first" before wedding season is over. Queen Elizabeth II's cousin, Lord Ivar Mountbatten, announced that he will marry his partner James Coyle this summer in the royal family's first gay marriage, reported the Daily Mail. Lord Mountbatten made history in 2016 when he announced he was gay, becoming the first member of the royal family to do so. Shortly after, he revealed his relationship with now-fiance Coyle.

(Note that this is from the point of view of a LGBT publication in the U.K.) Pope Francis has condemned same-sex parents and abortion in a series of scathing comments. It had been hoped that the Pope was in the process of softening the Catholic Church’s position on LGBT rights, particularly as it was just last month that he told Juan Carlos Cruz, a gay survivor of sexual abuse by a prominent Chilean priest: “God made you like this and loves you like this and I don’t care.” However, during unscripted remarks at Forum delle Famiglie, an Italian group for...

DEVON, England, June 18, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) -- Another royal wedding is about to dominate the media, albeit for a very different reason than Prince Harry and Meagan Markle’s recent nuptials. Lord Ivar Mountbatten, third cousin once removed to Queen Elizabeth, has announced he will be “marrying” James Coyle, marking the first same-sex “wedding” in the extended British royal family. Ivar came out as homosexual in 2016, several years after divorcing his wife Penny Mountbatten. The couple had three daughters, who are currently 15, 20, and 22 years old. But despite their divorce, Penny told the UK Daily Mail she’s so...

June 18, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) – Jim Obergefell, the man whose name will be forever associated with the institution of genderless marriage in the United States, said he “was heartbroken and devastated,” by the Supreme Court’s Masterpiece Cakeshop decision.   But more than that, Obergefell is frightened.  Very frightened. It’s not the actuality of the ruling that scares him; it’s the boogeymen he has concocted in order to shoo away any second guessing about the high court’s judgement in his favor three years ago.   “After deciding in favor of marriage equality in Obergefell v. Hodges,” asked Obergefell in a commentary...

Twenty-three of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams are slated to host LGBT “pride nights” in 2018, leaving just two teams that have never officially celebrated homosexuality. Most of the events are slated to occur in June, Outsports.com reported, to coincide with LGBT Pride Month. Among the teams joining the trend are the Chicago Cubs, who are also doing a second event in August; Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Kansas City Royals. The Brewers, Baltimore Orioles, and Cincinnati Reds are among the teams officially joining the trend for the first time...

Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel is facing criticism after repeatedly making lewd jokes suggesting a homosexual relationship between Fox News host Sean Hannity and President Donald Trump. During a heated Twitter exchange between Kimmel and Hannity, the ABC funnyman repeatedly suggested that President Trump and Hannity were having a sexual relationship. “When your clown makeup rubs off on Trump’s ass, does it make his butt look like a Creamsicle,” Kimmel quipped in response to a Hannity tweet claiming Kimmel had sexually harassed young women. Homosexual rights got a boost from a groundbreaking judgment of the European Court of Justice that forces all EU member states to welcome the same-sex "spouses" of EU citizens, even when they are not EU nationals. The European Court of Justice fell short of imposing an obligation on EU member states to recognize homosexual marriages but opened another avenue for homosexual marriage in Europe by declaring a "derived right of residence" in EU states for same-sex spouses of EU nationals who are non-EU citizen. The Court recognized that homosexual marriage may not be a human right but held that homosexual...
